The name is a thank-you. In 1598 the Onate expedition called the Pilabo Pueblo Socorro, help or relief, because the people there fed and sheltered them. Franciscans who came with the expedition founded the San Miguel mission the same year; the old church was built around 1627 and destroyed in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro ran through here for two hundred and twenty-three years, connecting New Mexico to Mexico City and Spain, following trails Indigenous people had used long before. The New Mexico School of Mines was founded in 1889 and is now New Mexico Tech, and the Very Large Array, sited on the Plains of San Agustin in 1975, is headquartered in town.
