Named for a radio show and built over natural geothermal springs along the Rio Grande, Truth or Consequences is a longtime soaking and spa destination near Elephant Butte Lake. Its bathhouses and slow desert rhythm make it one of New Mexico's most wellness-centered communities.

The town was called Hot Springs, incorporated under that name in 1916, and became the seat of Sierra County in 1937. The springs it was named for still put out around a hundred liters a second at about 110 degrees. In 1950 the radio program Truth or Consequences was coming up on its tenth anniversary, and its host Ralph Edwards offered to broadcast the show from any town that would change its name to match. Hot Springs put it to a special election, the motion carried, the name changed on March 31, 1950, and the show went out from here the following evening. Edwards came back every year for fifty years.
