Grants stretches along historic Route 66 at the foot of 11,000-foot Mount Taylor, framed by El Malpais and El Morro's lava fields and sandstone bluffs. That dramatic volcanic landscape and sacred nearby peaks invite residents toward reflection and holistic outdoor living.
Downtown, the mining museum keeps the uranium years on record, and each February the Quadrathlon sends racers up Mount Taylor on bike, foot, ski and snowshoe. Between race weekends and long work weeks, a remote session slots into whatever hour is genuinely free. Sprays and essences go out from Michigan by mail.
Grants has been three different towns on the same spot. The Bluewater Dam of 1927 brought irrigation and the volcanic soil turned out to suit carrots so well that the place called itself the Carrot Capital. Then in 1950 a Navajo sheepherder named Paddy Martinez found uranium ore nearby, and for thirty years the mines around Grants produced about half the ore mined in the United States, until the bust of the 1980s ended it. Route 66 was aligned through here in 1926 along Santa Fe Avenue, which is the longest drivable stretch of the old road left in New Mexico. El Malpais National Monument south of town is thousands of acres of black lava, lava tubes and collapsed craters.
