The manual is aimed at a familiar situation: the dog that wrecks the house while you are out, the cat that shreds paper or claims the furniture, the bird that goes quiet and low when the house is empty. Its explanation is emotional rather than behavioural.

Animals left alone can be overwhelmed by fear that you are gone forever, that you have stopped loving them or forgotten them, and because they cannot always understand what they feel, that energy builds until they have to release it somehow.
