At nearly 9,000 feet in the Sacramento Mountains, Cloudcroft is a cool alpine village of forest trails, an old railroad trestle, and one of the country's highest golf courses above the Tularosa Basin. Its crisp mountain air and slow tempo naturally invite restorative self-care.
South of the village, the highway to the Sunspot observatories follows the rim through unbroken pine above the Tularosa Basin. The Alamogordo and Sacramento Mountains Railroad built the Mexican Canyon Trestle in 1899, and it is still standing in the canyon just outside the village: a curved wooden trestle three hundred and twenty-three feet long and fifty-two feet above the floor, put together from twelve-by-twelve timbers set fifteen feet apart with three-quarter-inch bolts and cast iron spacers. It is the largest survivor of fifty-eight trestles built for Charles B. Eddy's line, which climbed 4,747 feet in thirty-two and a half miles to reach the timber, and carried passengers up in open-sided cars to the cabins and hotels at the top. The railroad ran under various names until 1947, and the trestle was listed on the National Register in 1979.
