It still runs on its original acequia system, the network of irrigation ditches that waters the cottonwoods, gardens and flowers the village is known for, and that shade is the first thing visitors notice in a basin this dry. The Tularosa Rose Festival, long held on the first weekend of May and a cornerstone of village life, has been revived in recent years.
