Aztec sits on the Animas River in San Juan County, about twelve miles northeast of Farmington. Aztec Ruins National Monument stands on the west bank of the river inside the town, established in 1923 to protect the remains of an ancestral Puebloan farming community including a twelfth-century Chacoan great house. Despite the name, the builders had no connection to the Aztec of central Mexico. In the late eleventh century the influence of Chaco Canyon, forty-five miles south, began to reach this stretch of river, and Aztec Ruins is read today as an outlier of that larger world, connected to the Salmon Ruins downriver near Bloomfield and to Pueblo Bonito in the canyon itself.
