Violet Flame Reiki was received by Ivy Moore in August 2000 and dedicated by her to the Lady Quan Yin, who she says gently attuned her to the symbols. The account of how it arrived is specific. For six months she had been repeating a daily rosary of the mantra Namo Kuan Shih Yin Pu'sa in multiples of one hundred and eight, together with violet flame decrees, not looking for anything new but trying to deepen her spirituality.

The symbols then came, about forty of them, and she wrote as fast as she could to get them down. She was clear that they were old rather than new, and that this system is not higher or better than any other, describing all Reiki systems as facets of the same diamond. The manual gives a long account of Quan Yin, the bodhisattva of compassion known across China, Vietnam, Japan and Bali, whose name means one who hears the cries of the world and whose five major virtues are mercy, modesty, courage, justice and wisdom. Her colour here is a golden violet, a soft shade of St Germain's violet flame.
