Lola Valley Park follows the middle branch of the River Rouge through the township, the same water that gave Redford its name. An organ still plays before the film at the Redford Theatre most show nights, which says something about how long things last here. The name is a description. Early settlers forded the River Rouge here, and rouge is French for red, so the crossing became the red ford. The area was organized as Pekin Township in 1829 and renamed Redford in 1833.
Detroit annexed the eastern portions during the 1920s. To stop further annexation the Michigan legislature granted Redford charter-township status in 1926, which is why the boundary sits where it does today, roughly fifteen miles northwest of downtown Detroit. The 2020 census counted 49,504 residents.
The Redford Theatre opened on January 27, 1928 as an atmospheric movie palace and still holds one of fewer than forty Barton theatre organs remaining in its original installation. The Motor City Theatre Organ Society has run the building since 1966, screening classic films and hosting live events. The Detroit Model Railroad Club also operates an elaborate layout in the township.
Redford turns up in music from both directions. Rocker Ted Nugent was born here on December 13, 1948, and folk musician Sufjan Stevens named a track for the place, Redford (For Yia-Yia and Pappou), on his 2003 album Michigan.
