This is the New York Bedford, in Westchester County near the Connecticut border, and its historic district takes in most of the original hamlet founded in 1680 by settlers from the Colony of Connecticut. It was laid out on the New England village-green plan, and large maples still line Pound Ridge Road and surround the green, which remains the focal point. The district sits at a bend in the Old Post Road, now Route 22, and holds the 1787 Court House, an 1872 Presbyterian church, the Old Burying Ground on the hillside north of the green flanked by an 1805 church and a general store of about 1838, the 1807 library that began as Bedford Academy, an 1829 school house and a post office of around 1838. Through the efforts of John Jay, who lived nearby, the village became one of Westchester's two county seats after the Revolution and stayed one until 1870.
