This is the Warwick in Orange County. It was settled in the middle of the eighteenth century and the village incorporated in 1867. Martha Washington stayed at Baird's Tavern on Main Street during the Revolution, and the building is still there. The village historic district covers a hundred and thirty acres along Routes 94 and 17A through the center of town and is on the National Register; the oldest building in it is the Shingle House of 1764, kept by the local historical society. The farmland around the village is some of the most productive in the state, and the town has stayed agricultural in a county that mostly has not.
