Mesilla Plaza is a National Historic Landmark, and the flag raising for the Gadsden Purchase took place there in 1854, which is the moment the town became part of the United States. The old Dona Ana County courthouse and jail, built in 1850, still stands on the plaza; Billy the Kid was tried in that building.
