This town went through three names in nine years. The railroad came up the lower Pecos in 1894 to link Roswell with Eddy, and the halfway siding was called Miller after a railroad man. In 1899 it became Stegman after the first postmistress. Then in 1903 the Artesia Townsite Company and the Artesia Improvement Company renamed it Artesia to advertise the artesian wells, which were the whole reason to settle here and which watered the farms around it. Twenty years of unchecked flow had begun to exhaust them by the early 1920s. Oil was found in Eddy County in 1909 near Dayton, eight miles south, and that turned into the other half of the local economy.
