Walker wraps around Grand Rapids on the north and the west, and it became a city in 1962 largely as a defensive measure.
Millennium Park is the largest thing here by a wide margin, more than fourteen hundred acres spanning Walker, Wyoming and Grand Rapids, which puts it among the largest urban parks in the country. WZZM-13, the region's ABC affiliate, broadcasts from Walker as well. The city divides itself into four neighborhood areas, Alpine, Northwest, Standale and South Walker, and Standale remains the historic commercial heart. The Walker Ice and Fitness Center holds Winterfest each December, and a Pumpkin Bash runs in the fall. Walker Homestead puts on farm-to-table dinners and live music through the season. The city also keeps a sister-city relationship with Colac, in Victoria, Australia.
