Holt is Lansing's large southern neighbor that never became a city.
Geology gave the town its best feature. The Mason Esker, Michigan's longest, is a gravel ridge left by meltwater from a retreating glacier, running roughly twenty miles from south of Lansing through Holt and on past Mason. The township built a park at it: Esker Landing covers fifteen acres with a fishing dock, a kayak launch onto Cedar Lake, self-service kayak rentals, a pavilion and restrooms.

Around twenty-five thousand six hundred people live here inside Delhi Charter Township, under township government, a big school district and the commercial spine of Cedar Street. The community chose that arrangement deliberately. Rather than incorporate, Delhi voters took charter township status by 550 to 324 in 1961, which gave Holt home-rule powers with no mayor and no city hall. The name is an accident of the postal service. Joseph Holt happened to be the sitting U.S. Postmaster General in 1860 when the Delhi Center post office needed a new name to stop mail being confused with another Delhi. He had no connection to the place, and residents went on calling it Delhi Center until after 1900. The rest of the park system is unusually deep for a community this size. Valhalla Park is the largest and most developed at forty-five acres on Keller and Pine Tree Roads, holding woods, fields, a pond and a lake. John Taylor Memorial Park, thirteen acres on south Cedar Street, is described by the township as the center of winter recreation thanks to its topography, which is the polite way of saying it has the hills. Kiwanis Park runs to fourteen acres on Maple Street with eight tennis courts. Veterans Memorial Gardens takes five and a half acres at 2074 Aurelius Road. The calendar is genuinely local. Cruise to Holt fills the Holt Farmers' Market lot at 2150 Cedar Street with classic cars and motorcycles on Friday evenings from May through September. Halloween in the Park runs a Trick-or-Treat Trail at Valhalla with more than forty local businesses. The Community Tree Lighting at Veterans Memorial Gardens has passed its thirtieth year. Long before the post office, this land was ceded in the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw, and Chief Okemos traveled the country along Sycamore Creek; Anishinaabe trails became Grand River Avenue and the I-96 corridor.
