Charles City sits on the Cedar River in Floyd County, and its recent history is written along that riverbank. In 1906 the county board ordered a two-hundred-and-seventy-foot suspension footbridge built across the Cedar so people on the east side could reach the Chautauqua grounds on the west. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 2, 1990, and until the record flood of 2008 it was the oldest surviving suspension bridge in the country. A cable-stayed replacement designed to echo the original opened in 2010. The town used land bought out after that flood to build Riverfront Park and, with it, the first whitewater park in Iowa, a twelve-hundred-foot course that opened in the summer of 2011 and replaced a dangerous low-head dam.
