Edwardsville is a historic Madison County town anchored by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the wooded Watershed Nature Center. A college community with tree-lined streets and abundant trails leans naturally toward mindful, holistic practices that gently ease everyday stress.
Laid out in 1813 and named for territorial governor Ninian Edwards, this is one of the oldest towns in the state and has been the Madison County seat throughout. Old towns keep long habits. Flower essences are prepared by hand in Michigan and posted to your address, one order at a time.
Thomas Kirkpatrick settled here in 1805 and named the place for his friend Ninian Edwards, then the territorial governor; the city incorporated in 1818, the year Illinois became a state. In 1890 the manufacturer N. O. Nelson built plumbing factories here and laid out a cooperative village for the workers called Leclaire, which was absorbed into Edwardsville in 1934 and is now a National Register district. The Madison County courthouse, four stories of white marble rising to six at the back, was built between 1913 and 1915. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is here.
