Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States, home to more than two hundred and forty-five bird species. The refuge is named for the political cartoonist turned conservationist Jay Norwood Darling, who fought the sale of environmentally valuable island land to developers; at his urging President Truman signed the executive order creating the refuge in 1945, eighteen years before the causeway opened the island to tourism in 1963. Sanibel is also a world-class shelling beach with more than four hundred species, and the posture collectors adopt is known locally as the Sanibel stoop. Shelling is prohibited inside refuge waters.
