That history runs from Chinese Taoist alchemy, where the manual quotes the sinologist Edward Chalmers Werner, a late member of the Chinese Government's Historiological Bureau in Peking, on Chang Tao-Ling, born in A.D. 35, through Egypt and the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, reputed to have lived around 1900 B.C., to the Arabian adept Geber around 750 A.D. and on to the English alchemists Roger Bacon, Sir George Ripley, Edward Kelly and Thomas Vaughan.
