Governor Benning Wentworth fixed the boundaries of Norwich on July 4, 1761. Alden Partridge, a former superintendent of West Point, founded the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy here in 1819, took it to Connecticut in 1825, brought it back in 1835 with a congressional charter, and it stayed until the building burned in 1866, after which it moved to Northfield as Norwich University. The town sits on the west bank of the Connecticut River with the Ledyard Bridge running across to Hanover in New Hampshire. The Montshire Museum of Science and King Arthur Baking are both here.
