In 1742 a small group of Moravians moved to a place the Lenape called Macungie and built cabins and a log church in a settlement they named Emmaus. For its first century it was a closed Moravian village on land owned by the church, and only in 1859 did it incorporate as a Pennsylvania borough. The railroad arrived that same year and opened the town to manufacturing; the early industries were iron mining, iron furnaces, a foundry and a machine company. That sequence, a century of church-owned village life followed by a sudden industrial opening, is why the street pattern and the older building stock here read differently from the mill towns around it in the Lehigh Valley.
