Milwaukie sits along the Willamette River just south of Portland, the historic birthplace of the Bing cherry, with riverfront parks, a light-rail-linked downtown, and the Trolley Trail. Its walkable, river-touched neighborhoods lean naturally toward mindful, community-minded wellness.
Elk Rock Island rises out of the Willamette just offshore, reachable on foot only when the river drops low in late summer. Comic books have been published from this town for decades, another quiet piece of its character. Essences are hand-blended in Michigan and posted to the house, meeting you where you already are.
Lot Whitcomb settled here in 1847, bought six hundred acres on the Willamette, put up a sawmill and a gristmill and platted the town in 1849 as a deliberate rival to Oregon City upriver, naming it for Milwaukee in Wisconsin. Seth Lewelling arrived within months of Whitcomb and started a nursery; his brother Henderson had hauled cherry trees by oxcart from Iowa in 1847, which is where the modern western fruit orchard begins. In 1875 Seth bred the sweet cherry that has been the most widely planted variety in the country ever since, and named it Bing after his Manchurian foreman, who supervised thirty Chinese workers on the place.
