Marietta was the first permanent American settlement in the Northwest Territory, made on April 7, 1788 where the Muskingum comes into the Ohio. The forty-eight men of the Ohio Company of Associates, many of them Revolutionary War soldiers, left New England in the winter of 1787 and 1788 and spent cold months getting here. In 1801 they laid the town cemetery around an Adena mound called Conus, built somewhere between 100 BC and 500 AD, and saved it; the ground holds more Revolutionary War officers than any other burying place in the country.
