A lively Portage County college town, Kent is built around Kent State University and the Cuyahoga River, which tumbles over the dam at the heart of downtown. With the Cuyahoga Valley and countless bike-and-hike trails close at hand, it's an energetic yet nature-rich setting for mindful, restorative practices.
Kent thins out each May as students head home, and the Haymaker Farmers Market carries on for the neighbors who stay. Attunement materials are digital and yours to keep, so a change of address never separates you from them. Distance sessions work equally well from a dorm, a rental, or a childhood bedroom.
The city owes itself to the Cuyahoga. Jacob Haymaker put up a grist mill on the river in 1805 and the settlement that grew around it was called Franklin Mills. About twenty-five years later the same river brought Zenas Kent, and when the place incorporated as a village in 1867 it was renamed for his son Marvin, who promoted the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad. William Kent later gave the land for the state normal school founded in 1910, which became Kent State University. Standing Rock still sits out in the middle of the river, older than any of it.
