Philander Chase founded Kenyon College in 1824, first at his own house in Worthington and then out here in rural Knox County, and it is the oldest private college in Ohio. He founded the village alongside the campus the same year and named it for Admiral James Gambier, the British sponsor who had given the most money. The college began as an Episcopal school for training clergy on the frontier and turned into a classical one; Rutherford B. Hayes came out of it. The first train reached Gambier in the fall of 1866, and after the rails were pulled up the corridor was paved as the Kokosing Gap Trail, finished in 1994, running along the river between Mount Vernon and Danville.
