Lake Hickory, a reservoir on the Catawba River completed by Duke Power in 1927, runs along the western edge of the city. Bakers Mountain Park covers nearly two hundred acres of forested upland in the southern part of the county. Hickory Motor Speedway has hosted short-track racing since 1951. The 2020 census counted 43,490 people in the city.
