Don Diego de Vargas founded Bernalillo in 1695 on the east bank of the Rio Grande along the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, and the main street, Camino del Pueblo, still runs on that line; for centuries it was the town's only link to the wider world, connecting Santa Fe to Mexico City. Just west of town is Kuaua Pueblo, settled around 1325, which by 1540 held about twelve hundred people in roughly twelve hundred rooms across six acres. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado wintered his expedition at Tiguex here that year. A square kiva at the site has restored murals, and thirteen original panels are kept in the museum. Las Fiestas de San Lorenzo has been held each August for more than three hundred and thirty years.
