The largest city for over a hundred miles in every direction, Elko sits at five thousand feet along the Humboldt River in the Great Basin, where ranching, gold mining, and a deep Basque heritage shape a community that is self-reliant by necessity and grounded by the open landscape around it.

Elko was founded in 1868 by settlers at the eastern end of the Central Pacific Railroad tracks, and Charles Crocker reportedly named it by adding an "o" to "Elk." It was incorporated as a city in 1917 and serves as the county seat of Elko County. The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering has been held every January since 1985, drawing poets, musicians, and ranchers for a week-long celebration of rural Western life. The National Basque Festival has run every July since 1963, reflecting the Basque sheepherding families who settled in the area in the late nineteenth century. The Ruby Mountains rise twenty-one miles to the south, and Lamoille Canyon is often called the Yosemite of Nevada. Great Basin College serves the region. The first commercial airmail flight in the United States landed in Elko in 1926. The 2020 census counted 20,564 people.
