Willow Run is the defining place in the township. Ford's bomber plant, designed by the industrial architect Albert Kahn and once described as the most enormous room in the history of man, opened between 1941 and 1943 and turned out B-24 Liberators at close to one an hour. The adjacent Willow Village went up to house the workers, and the plant became the setting that gave the country Rosie the Riveter.

The airfield built alongside it is still working. Kalitta Air, a major cargo carrier, is headquartered at Willow Run, which anchors the local economy as a freight and general-aviation hub. The Michigan Flight Museum, founded by the Yankee Air Force in 1981 and known for years as the Yankee Air Museum, keeps historic warbirds on the field.

The township itself is older than the county around it. It was organized in 1827 as part of Wayne County, two years before Washtenaw County was created in 1829, and the name honors General Demetrios Ypsilantis of the Greek War of Independence, chosen when the settlement was platted in 1825. The first settlement here, Woodruff's Grove, dates to 1823 on the Huron River.

The 2020 census counted 55,670 residents. General Motors ran the Willow Run Transmission plant on the site for decades after acquiring it in 1953, growing it to nearly five million square feet before it closed. Ford Lake and its dam on the Huron River give the township its own stretch of open water.
