Farm country turned university-adjacent suburb, where education and health-care work fill most of the week and the old ground is still visible.
Pittsfield wraps the south and east sides of Ann Arbor, close enough that the city’s hours become yours. Textile Road still runs past a farmstead that stayed in one family for six generations. Sessions are held remotely so nothing is added to the commute, and essence blends arrive by post.
George W. Noyes made the first federal land purchase in the area around 1824, drawing settlers from New York, Pennsylvania and New England to farm. The land sat within Ann Arbor Township, organized in 1827, until the Michigan Territorial Council established the Township of Pitt on March 7, 1834. The name, suggested by Ezra Carpenter, honored the British statesman William Pitt, and the Michigan Legislature renamed it Pittsfield Township in 1839.
McCracken School, the first school in the county, was built in Pittsfield in 1825, and the Toledo and Ann Arbor Railroad was later built through the township.
The farm era left a landmark that is still standing. The Sutherland-Wilson Farm at 797 Textile Road was founded in 1832 and lived on by the same family for six generations until 2000. It is now a township-owned history museum, and the annual Pittsfield Township Harvest Festival there runs historic house and building tours, a petting farm, hay rides, historic carriage photos, lawn games and face painting.
Today Pittsfield is the third largest municipality in Washtenaw County with nearly forty thousand residents, a population that more than doubled between 1980 and 2000. Educational services, health care and social assistance account for about thirty-five percent of resident jobs, with manufacturing near fourteen percent. Ann Arbor Municipal Airport is physically located in the township, Lillie Park sits at Haven Lake, and the Ann Arbor District Library opened a Pittsfield branch in 2006.
