The commercial heart of its metro area, where daily life runs along two busy corridors and a quiet hour has to be deliberately kept.
Bay Road and Tittabawassee draw the whole Tri-Cities in for shopping, which makes the township busier than its population alone suggests. Holding a session at home keeps one part of the week off those corridors. Essence blends are prepared in Michigan and posted to your address.
The township is older than the county it belongs to. Saginaw Charter Township was organized in 1831, while the region was still part of Oakland County, four years before Saginaw County itself was organized in 1835. When the city of Saginaw incorporated in 1857, land west of the Saginaw River was carved out of the township to help form the new city.
The wider area grew from an 1819 treaty-era fort into a nineteenth-century lumber and salt boomtown, with the township remaining the surrounding community as the city industrialized. It wraps the western and northern edges of Saginaw and now functions as the retail and commercial hub of the metropolitan area, concentrated along the Bay Road and Tittabawassee Road corridors.
Fashion Square Mall, built in 1972 by the Richard E. Jacobs Group, is the township's signature retail center and draws shoppers from across the Saginaw, Bay City and Midland tri-city area. The 2020 population stood at 39,647, with a median age of about 42.
Heritage High School on North Center Road was formed in 1988 by merging Douglas MacArthur and Dwight D. Eisenhower high schools, and its Hawks teams represent Saginaw Township Community Schools. In May 2020 the Edenville and Sanford dam failures upstream triggered catastrophic flooding across mid-Michigan.
