A township that has called itself a vacation for a century, where rest is part of the local self-image rather than a luxury.
Lake Orion runs 506 acres and reaches about eighty feet deep, and the township motto still reads Where Living Is a Vacation. Between the Paint Creek and Polly Ann trails there is a good deal of ground to cover slowly. A remote session keeps that unhurried, and essence blends are mixed in Michigan and mailed.
This was Ojibwa, Odawa and Potawatomi homeland, and the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw opened the land to settlement. Moses Munson arrived in 1824, built a sawmill in 1825 and planted the first orchard. Jesse Decker came in 1825, and the place was known first as Decker's Settlement and then as Canandaigua, after Canandaigua, New York.
The name changed in 1835. Canandaigua became Orion, Lake Canandaigua became Lake Orion, and the Michigan Territorial government approved the Township of Orion, with Decker as first supervisor at a salary of two dollars a year.
The railroad turned the lake into a resort. Detroiters rode north to a lakeside amusement park on Park Island, and the marketing of the era left a stack of names behind, among them Venice of the Middle West and Paris of Detroit. The official motto, Where Living Is a Vacation, still stands. Lake Orion covers 506 acres, reaches roughly eighty feet deep and is the eighth largest lake by area in Oakland County.
General Motors' Orion Assembly plant is a major employer, historically building small cars and retooled for electric pickup trucks. The township holds more than 4,200 acres of parks and open space and 42 lakes larger than five acres, including Friendship Park at about 135 acres and Camp Agawam, a former Boy Scouts camp transferred to township ownership in 2014. The Paint Creek Trail runs 8.9 miles, the Polly Ann Trail follows a former rail corridor, and Wildwood Amphitheater hosts free summer concerts and outdoor films. Lake Orion High School teams are the Dragons, a mascot drawn from local folklore.
