In 1912 Edna St. Vincent Millay recited Renascence, written on Mount Battie, to guests at the Whitehall Inn, and a listener offered to pay for her to go to Vassar. Captain Frank Swift started the cruise schooner trade in 1936, which is where the windjammer fleet in the harbor comes from, and Peyton Place was filmed here in 1957.
