In the 1970s and 1980s followers of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi were asked to relocate to Fairfield and build an intentional community of meditators, and they took over the campus of the closed Parsons College to house Maharishi International University. Students and faculty there practice Transcendental Meditation as part of ordinary university life, and the movement has long worked to gather enough meditators twice a day in its domes. The arrival changed the town, which had been a quiet farming county seat whose largest events were the county fair and the National Guard band, into a place with vegetarian restaurants, galleries and shops selling gems, and a noticeably international population for its size.
