This is Woodstock in McHenry County, and it built typewriters. The Emerson and Oliver factories here had made more than half the typewriters in the world by 1922, and the plant ran until 1970. Orson Welles arrived at the Todd School for Boys at ten years old in 1926 and stayed five years, later saying that if he was from anywhere it was Woodstock, Illinois; at nineteen, in July 1934, he ran the Todd Theatre Festival at the Woodstock Opera House and shot his short film The Hearts of Age on the school campus. The 1993 film Groundhog Day, set in Pennsylvania, was shot around the square here, and the locations carry plaques.
