DeKalb is anchored by Northern Illinois University and set amid the wide prairie farmland of northern Illinois. The steady, open landscape and lively student community make room for mindful, holistic practices that support a settled and grounded inner life.
Barbed wire was patented on a DeKalb farm in the 1870s, and the seed corn trade that followed carried the town's name onto fields across the Midwest. Plain, practical roots run deep here. Flower essences suit that temper, put together by hand in Michigan from flowers and sent through the mail.
Joseph Glidden patented the conventional double-strand barbed wire here in 1874, and with Isaac Ellwood manufactured it through the Barb Fence Company; Jacob Haish, working in the same town, was another of the inventors. That one product enclosed the western range and made three fortunes in one small Illinois city. Glidden and Ellwood then put substantial parts of those fortunes back into establishing the state teachers college between 1892 and 1898, which opened in 1895 as Northern Illinois State Normal School and is now Northern Illinois University. The town is named for Baron Johann de Kalb, a major general who died in the Revolutionary War.
