For the last decades of the nineteenth century Batavia was a centre of windmill manufacturing, and six makers operated in this one Fox River town. The Challenge Windmill Company opened the first factory, followed by the U.S. Wind Engine and Pump Company and the Appleton Manufacturing Company, whose factory building still stands on the riverwalk and now serves as the city government centre. The Batavia Riverwalk itself took six years to build, much of it with volunteer labour, and original Batavia-made windmills were tracked down, bought, restored and raised along it; seven now stand there. In Kane County the Fox River towns are linked by a long multi-use path running from Algonquin in the north to Oswego in the south, and through Batavia it follows both banks.
