Crystal River sits on Kings Bay in Citrus County, a six-hundred-acre bay at the head of a tidal river that runs about six miles out to the Gulf. It is a first-magnitude spring system fed by more than seventy springs, the second largest spring group in Florida, and the water comes out of the limestone aquifer at about seventy-two degrees all year. When the Gulf drops below sixty-eight in winter, hundreds of manatees move into the shallow springs, which makes Kings Bay the largest natural winter refuge for manatees on the Florida Gulf coast. Three Sisters Springs, a clover of vents called Pretty, Big and Little Sister, is the last undeveloped spring habitat in the bay, and Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1983, is the only refuge in the country created specifically to protect the Florida manatee.
