The name comes from the Ventureno Chumash word 'awhay, meaning moon. Edward Drummond Libbey of the Libbey Glass Company first wintered here in 1907 and bought property in 1909, and in 1916 he hired the architects Frank Mead and Richard Requa to redesign the center of town; the work was finished in March 1917 and produced the Mission-style arcade along the main street. The town, until then called Nordhoff, was renamed Ojai the same month, so the name and the face of the place changed together. It incorporated on August 5, 1921.
