How a Reiki Attunement Works and How to Choose One

Why People Want a Practice They Can Carry With Them

A lot of people come looking for something steady that does not require another appointment on an already full calendar. They want a practice that lives in their own two hands and costs nothing to use again.

Reiki answers that wish for many people. After a teacher attunes you, you can place your hands on your own shoulders at midnight and begin.

The question that follows is usually practical. People want to know what an attunement actually involves and which one to choose first.

What a Reiki Attunement Actually Is

An attunement is a short ceremony in which a Reiki Master Teacher opens the energy pathways you already have. Think of it as tuning an instrument that was always in the room.

The teacher does not give you their personal energy. They connect you to the Reiki stream itself, which then moves through you whenever you intend it to.

This connection stays with you. People who stop practicing for years find the connection still there when they place their hands down again.

How an Attunement Works, Step by Step

Every lineage has small differences in form, and the shape of the ceremony stays recognizable across them. Here is the usual order of things.

  • You prepare beforehand by eating lightly, drinking water, and setting a quiet window of time for yourself.
  • You sit comfortably with your eyes closed and your hands resting in your lap or at your heart.
  • The teacher grounds themselves, then calls in Reiki and your lineage with intention and prayer.
  • The teacher works with your crown, your hands, and your heart, using breath, symbols and specific movements.
  • The ceremony closes, and you sit for a few minutes before you speak or stand up.
  • Your teacher then explains hand positions, self-practice, and how to work with what you received.

People describe the experience very differently from one another. Some feel warmth, tingling or color behind the eyes, and others feel almost nothing at all during the ceremony itself.

Feeling nothing does not mean the attunement failed. The connection does not depend on your sensitivity to it on that particular afternoon.

Distance Attunements Work the Same Way

You do not have to sit in the same room as your teacher. Reiki is not limited by distance, and teachers have passed attunements remotely for decades.

Many teachers use the chi ball method. The teacher builds the attunement into a sphere of energy, names it for you, and sets it to open at the moment you receive it.

You choose a quiet time, sit down, state that you are ready, and let it come in. People who receive attunements this way report the same range of experiences as those who sit in person.

What the Days After an Attunement Can Look Like

Many traditions speak of a twenty one day period after an attunement, with roughly three days given to each main energy center. Practitioners often use this window for daily self-practice and some honest journaling.

People report vivid dreams, old memories surfacing, more thirst, and shifts in appetite or sleep during these weeks. Others report a quiet, uneventful stretch and nothing dramatic at all.

Both are normal. Drink water, rest when you can, and keep your hands on yourself for a few minutes each morning.

If something feels heavy or does not settle, talk with your teacher. If your mood or your body concerns you, speak with a doctor or mental health professional as well.

How to Choose From the Attunement Collection

The Reiki attunements collection holds a wide range, from the traditional Usui levels to specialized lines that build on them. The range helps once you know how to read it.

  • If you are brand new, start with Usui Reiki Level 1. This level centers on self-practice and hands-on work with family and friends.
  • If you already hold Level 1, Level 2 introduces the first symbols and opens distance work for people who cannot be in the room.
  • If you want to teach, the Master Teacher level covers the master symbol and the process of passing attunements to students.
  • If you hold the Usui levels already, the specialized attunements let you work with a particular focus, such as angelic lines, crystal work or ancestral themes.

Read each description slowly and notice which words pull at you. Your intuition is part of the selection process, and it usually knows before your reasoning catches up.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Book

A good teacher welcomes questions and answers them plainly. Ask these before you commit.

  • What lineage do you carry, and can you show me the line back to Mikao Usui?
  • What materials or manual come with this attunement?
  • How do you handle questions after the ceremony is over?
  • Is this attunement in person or at a distance, and how do you prepare me for it?

You should feel comfortable with the answers and with the person giving them. Reiki passes through relationship, so the fit matters more than the longest list of credentials.

Where an Attunement Fits in a Wellness Routine

Attunements suit people who already value quiet daily practice. Ten minutes of self-Reiki pairs easily with a morning routine that includes water, breath and a few moments of stillness.

Many practitioners also keep a flower essence or an aura spray nearby for the same few minutes. These tools do not replace the hands, and they give your practice a shape you can return to.

Reiki supports emotional balance and a sense of grounding for many people who practice it. It sits alongside the rest of your care rather than standing in for any of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience to receive a Reiki attunement?

No. Usui Reiki Level 1 assumes no background in energy work, and your teacher walks you through hand positions and daily practice afterward.

Can a Reiki attunement wear off if I stop practicing?

The connection does not expire. Your confidence and sensitivity may fade with disuse, and both return within a few weeks of steady self-practice.

Is a distance attunement weaker than an in person one?

Teachers in most lineages consider them equal. Reiki is not bound by physical distance, and the same intention and symbols carry the attunement either way.

How long should I wait between Reiki levels?

Many teachers suggest at least twenty one days and often several months. Give yourself time to practice daily at one level before you reach for the next.
