Totem Reiki was created by Stephanie Brail and published through the Element Energy Center in 2007. It rests on the idea that each of us has a spiritual connection with a particular animal that serves as guide and helper, either through life or through a particular stretch of it. The manual is careful to distinguish this system from the many single-animal systems already in circulation, such as Bear or Tiger Reiki.

Totem Reiki does not attune you to one fixed creature, and its purpose is to connect you with your own personal animal totem and then invite that totem into your healing sessions, whether you have one totem for life or several arriving at different times. The author's own account is disarmingly specific: during her attunement a brown horse appeared with a white streak on its nose and a tuft of blond hair on its mane, told her his name was Cantaloupe, and ran beside her through a sunny field, and she only afterwards found that the horse totem is associated with freedom, travel and adventure.
