Phoenix Rising Reiki was channeled by Linda C. Colibert, Reiki Grand Master Teacher, in January 2006, with assistance from Jay M. Burrell, and the artwork was channeled by Linda C. Colibert as well. The system takes the phoenix as its whole framework: the sun bird of myth that catches fire at the end of its life and rises again from the ashes, and so stands for purification, rebirth and transformation. The manual is precise about the colours.

The phoenix appears predominantly in red and golden yellow, sometimes with a tint of orange, and red and yellow are named as the actual colours of power that the system works with, along with the elements of sun, fire and air. Its stated work is to burn away negative thought patterns acquired in this lifetime and in past ones, releasing them to be transformed into positive energy so that what the universe has for you can reach you. During the attunement the Phoenix Rising symbol is placed in colour into your heart chakra by the phoenix itself.

The manual also notes that spirit animal guides and totem animals sometimes appear during the attunement, and that they come to offer protection and assistance.
