The Morrigan, the Great Queen or Phantom Queen, is the shape-shifting Celtic goddess of war, fate and death, and a queen among the Tuatha De Danann, the People of the Goddess Danu who were the gods of pagan Ireland before they withdrew into the hills and the undersea kingdoms.

She aided the defeat of the Firbolgs at the First Battle of Magh Tuireadh and the Fomorii at the second, and the Celts believed she flew shrieking over the battlefield as a raven or hooded crow, foretelling and influencing the outcome of the fray. She appears both as a single goddess and as a triune one, her other aspects being Badb, whose name means vulture or venomous, and Nemain, meaning frenzy or fury.

She is also the Washer at the Ford, found rinsing the clothes of men about to die, and she presided over rivers, lakes and fresh water while standing as patroness of revenge, night, magic, prophecy, priestesses and witches.

Yet she seldom killed herself; she used her power and magick to stir up the warriors she favored, and the Celts honored her as the one who brought honorable death so that rebirth could follow, which makes her a fertility goddess as much as a battle goddess.

This manual was channeled and compiled by Elizabeth Hibel in June 2007, and it carries the related Welsh sea goddess Morgen of the Ninefold Sisterhood, who rules death, rebirth, fate and the sea, through to her later form as Morgan le Fay.
