Bennett bought a studio here in 1865 and his stereoscopic views of the sandstone formations went all over the country, which is most of the reason anybody outside Wisconsin had heard of the place. The Dells themselves are a narrow sandstone gorge on the Wisconsin River. The water parks that now dominate the town came with an expansion beginning in the late 1970s.
