The name is French for the bottom of the lake, which is exactly where the city sits, at the southern end of Lake Winnebago. James Duane Doty, the same judge who set up Madison, is credited with founding it, and in 1836 the legislator John Arndt tried and failed to have it made the territorial capital. It incorporated as a village on March 1, 1847 and as a city on April 6, 1852. Lakeside Park runs to 400 acres on the water, and its lighthouse and observation tower are open from April 15 to October 15.
