Bayfield was named in 1856 for Henry Bayfield, the British Royal Navy surveyor who charted this part of Lake Superior in 1822 and 1823, and a post office opened the same year. The city is the gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and its 21 islands, and the headquarters building was put up in sandstone quarried from those islands before they were protected. A ferry runs across to La Pointe on Madeline Island, the largest of the group and the only one outside the National Lakeshore. Apple Fest brings around 60,000 people to a town of a few hundred on the first weekend in October.
