Bayfield was named in 1856 for Henry Bayfield, the British Royal Navy surveyor who charted this part of Lake Superior in 1822 and 1823, and a post office opened the same year. A ferry runs across to La Pointe on Madeline Island, the largest of the group and the only one outside the National Lakeshore. Apple Fest brings around 60,000 people to a town of a few hundred on the first weekend in October.
