Agrigento stands on a ridge above the southern coast of Sicily, and below it lies the Valley of the Temples, the remains of the Greek city of Akragas. It is one of the largest concentrations of Greek building anywhere outside Greece and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Temple of Concordia at its center survives very nearly whole, among the best preserved Doric temples that have come down to us, largely because it was converted into a church early enough that it was never quarried for its stone. Almond groves run through the archaeological park, and when they flower in late winter the town holds the Sagra del Mandorlo in Fiore, an almond blossom festival staged among the temples themselves.
