On August 27, 1859, Edwin Drake drilled the first commercially successful oil well in the world near Titusville, on the flats about a hundred and fifty feet from the east bank of Oil Creek in Cherrytree Township, Venango County. The well went down sixty-nine and a half feet, and it set off the first oil boom in the United States. Titusville had two hundred and fifty residents the year Drake drilled; by 1865 it held ten thousand. Boom towns rose all along the creek, Oil City, Petroleum Center, Pithole and Rynd Farm among them, and most are gone. The Drake Well Museum stands on the original site, and Oil Creek State Park now covers much of the valley the boom consumed.
