Just west of town the Historic Columbia River Highway climbs to the Rowena Crest viewpoint and the Tom McCall Preserve, where balsamroot and lupine come in each spring; the Rowena Plateau carries fifteen wildflowers found nowhere else and more than eight hundred species in total. Twelve miles east lay Celilo Falls, once among the largest waterfalls in North America and a gathering and salmon-fishing place for thousands of people over more than ten thousand years, submerged in the 1950s behind The Dalles Dam.
