Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. John Jacob Astor, a New York financier, sent traders out in 1811 and they built Fort Astoria on the south shore of the Columbia near its mouth, the first permanent United States settlement on the Pacific coast. Astor meant it as the far end of a chain of posts running across western North America, collecting inland furs, beaver above all, for shipment to markets in China. A small party of his men worked out a route east that later became part of the Oregon Trail. Lewis and Clark had wintered nearby a few years before.
